Archive for Sprites

Sprites and more Sprites

I was using some of my new found Google searching skills which I learned in a previous article Searching Google for Tutorials to find a couple of free sprites for you.

Philipp Lenssen created around 700 fantasy-themed avatar images a couple of years ago which he is releasing under the Creative Commons Licence. There is a large variety of sprites facing every direction, I have put a random sampling above, and I have LINKED it here for archival purposes (so many times I have found great sprites only to go back a couple of months later to find they are gone, since these are releases under Creative Commons Licence they are free to share and distribute).

Trying to find none ripped sprites which are free is kind of hard, after a bit more searching I came arcross a contact sheet full of Worms sprites. Click here to view the whole thing, above is a small above is a small sampling. Full credit to Egnio and more is on the spite contact sheet.

While searching for more sprites, I found a great website that is had a couple of Charset Generators (above is one I created) the one I tried is cool, you get to choose the Body, Hairstyle, Items, Face, etc. Quit cool, check it out. Also found a Faceset Generator and Battleset Generator at the same site.

Lastly I found a bunch of great sprites at The_Protagonist’s Domain I have pasted a couple of them above, as you can see they are very good quality, you can find a contact sheet on the site.

Reiners Tilesets

Searching for some more Sprites I can across Reiners Tilesets site that has a lot of game sprites which can use in your own games and  Reiner has also converted the sprites to use in MMF (Multimedia Fusion), if I recall correctly MMF used to be free, but now it seems they have released MMF2 which doesn’t look Free, too bad.

But I am getting off topic, this post is to tell you about Reiners Tilesets, and there are a lot.  You can  get 3D Graphics (Buildings, Plants, Misc) and 2D Graphics (Humans, Monsters, Animals, Buildings, Environments, Animated, Vehicles, Game Menus).  There is even a page of Sound effects if needed.

The site also available in Dutch.

6 Great Game Sprite Resources

Was looking around the net for a couple new resources for game sprites, here is a few I just discovered :

Game Sprite Archive - This site is very well laid out. It has sprites from all the old classic games from old consoles such as the 3DO :: Arcade :: Atari 2600 :: Computer :: Dreamcast :: Game Boy :: Game Boy Advance :: GameCube :: Genesis :: Master System :: Neo*Geo :: Neo*Geo CD :: Neo*Geo Pocket :: NES :: Nintendo 64 :: Nintendo DS :: PlayStation :: PlayStation 2 :: Saturn :: Super Nintendo, plus Custom sprites. I really like this site because they split up each sprites into section of Animated and Non-Animated plus there is even some box art for some of the old console games.

This next site has sprtes for 5690 cars from GTA / GTA London sprites. Each vehicle package you download will usually have several different variations on the them (ie several different looking Abulance). It is truly unbelievable resource if you are making a car game or a GTA type game.

This next one is for more my son, he really love Pokemon, and I found this site looking for some Pokemon for him to color in or draw. Check out TCGPlayer to see over 300 Pokemon sprites.

The Spriters Resource has a very large collections of Nintendo, Sega, Capcom, Square-Enix, Konami, Namco, SNK, and more. From the looks of it, the site is updated with a bunch of news sprites almost daily.

Last one to mention is VideoGameSprites.net which boasts over 20,000 Game Sprites from NEW, SNES, PSX, PS1, GBA, PC and Online games. They also have a great section of Game related Icons for Windows.

This is really the last one, which I found coutesy of VideoGameSprites.net but it is not of Game Sprites in particular, but the Backgrounds of the game, which I found interesting. It was updated recently, but before that had not been updated in a long long time. But this is a great resource of Backgrounds, the site has over 71,000 backgrounds from 161 different games. A couple of the categories in the menu are Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Gameboy Advanced and Playstation, you will also find a huge section with Final Fantasy Tactics Sprites and Textures.

VBExplorer.com free game sprites

The sprites below are found on VBExplorer.com  It is a very good resource if you want to learn Visual Basic.

The site contains a large amount of Source Code, which makes it easier to learn a programming language, at least in my opinion.  There are also great Tips to get started, Tutorials, VB Games, and a ToolBox of VB tools which are very helpful.

Below are some sprites I’ve found on the site.  First bunch are from Hermann Hillmann and the bottom row is by a great artist Floyd Yancey.

Hermann Hillmann :: Airplane || Female Warrior || Game Tile Set || Large Warbot || Male and Female Poses || Small Warbot || SpaceShip

Floyd Yancey :: Video Game Art

The ShyGuy Kingdom

Holy crap this site has tonnes and tonnes of sprites for your game making pleasure.

They are mostly all sprites for Classic games, so there is nothing here for you to make commercial games, but if you were going to make a commercial game you would probably use better looking sprites.  If you are thinking of doing a remake, this is a great site to get the sprites from so you can save your time programming rather then drawing.

Check out The ShyGuy Kingdom website for your next game programming idea and redo a classic.

Itakura’s NetHack Tiles

If you are going to make a dungeon crawler type game these are a great sprite tileset for you to use. Tonnes of monsters, armor, weapons, food, potions, plus lots of differnt dungeon type tiles in this set.

I have decided to start housing some of the sprites and tilesets I find here at NGP, just incase other sites I’ve found them on go down.

View HERE or right-click the link to download.

Original Spritelib by Ari Feldman

I have posted the new SpriteLib by Ari Feldman in another post, but this is the original SpriteLib (which I like more then his new SpriteLib) as there is more variety. And even though Mr. Feldman does not wish people to use these older sprites as he says they do not show his current artist abilities, his Old SpriteLib is better then anything more other can do. I appreciate both SpriteLibs from Ari, they are great for beginner game programmers.

Once again the great people at molotov.nu have managed to archive this great sprite library.

Free Sprites/Graphics by Hermann Hillmann

A bunch of free Graphics by Hermann Hillmann. They used to be housed on vbexplorer.com but seems like they are not any more. Luckily the nice folks over at molotov.nu have started to host them.

They are a great collection of 48×48 graphics sets. There are Outdoor, Desert, Housing, Futuristic tilesets, plus a giant 2mb tileset with all sorts of tiles for an outdoor adventure.

I’ve decided to host the files as well, just incase other sites go down.

Outdoor || Desert || Housing || Futuristic || Large Outdoor Collection (Mountains, Trees, etc.)

Right-click the links above to download tile sets.

Chess Board Graphics

A variety of different Chess Board graphics.

Ari Feldmans Sprite Library

From the Authors site “SpriteLib GPL a collection of static and animated graphic objects (also commonly known as sprites). It was created to provide hobbyist game developers with an assortment of images to use in their creations. Because of SpriteLib GPL, developers don’t have to waste precious time or money creating graphics from scratch.”

I found the SpriteLib invaluable when I started learning to make games. I am not an artist, and concentrating on the code rather then trying to make good graphics saved me tonnes of time.

I wrote about Ari in another post which I also post a link to Ari origianl Spritelib.
